Dr. Edward Tavel, Jr., the founder and medical director at Pain Specialists of Charleston, has been serving the Charleston community since 1993.
Born and raised in Charleston, he brings a deep understanding of the local community to his practice.
With extensive training in pain management, Dr. Tavel uses a wide range of interventional, non-surgical techniques to provide comprehensive pain treatment. He has a particular interest in neurostimulation and medical research. Notably, Dr. Tavel is skilled in radiofrequency ablation, a procedure that alleviates spine-related arthritis pain. He is also among the few doctors in the Charleston area who perform dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation.
Dr. Tavel earned his undergraduate degree from Davidson College and his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He then completed four years of specialized training in anesthesia and pain medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as chief resident in his final year. He holds board certifications from the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Pain Medicine.

WILL I BE PUT TO SLEEP FOR PROCEDURES?
Yes! As a board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Tavel ensures his patients are asleep or unconscious during surgery or other medical procedures when necessary. Dr. Tavel helps patients manage pain before, during, and after operations.

No, we accept both self-made and referral appointments.
HOW WILL PAIN SPECIALISTS OF CHARLESTON TREAT MY CHRONIC PAIN?
At your first appointment, you will discuss your chronic pain with our pain management specialists. They will perform a physical exam and may order additional tests and imaging to get a better idea of your condition. From there, they will be able to recommend treatment(s) to ease your pain like nerve blocks, injections, massages, and physical therapy.
