FAQS
WHAT IS COMMONLY INCLUDED IN PAIN MANAGEMENT TREATMENT?
At Pain Specialists of Charleston, our treatment options include injections (such as steroid injections), medical massage, nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulation, and more. We also work with you to identify lifestyle changes that can alleviate pain.
WHAT CAN I DO IF MY CHRONIC PAIN IS UNBEARABLY BAD?
Whether your pain has been around for years or just days, there are tried-and-true treatments to help you find relief. At-home remedies like cold or heat packs, regular massages, or improving sleep quality are just a few ways to soothe pain.
But the best way to treat your pain is by identifying and treating the root cause. At Pain Specialists of Charleston, we always start with a thorough evaluation to determine the best course of treatment to help you reclaim your quality of life. If you’re ready to get started, schedule your appointment today! No referral is necessary!
WHAT PAIN LEVEL IS CONSIDERED SEVERE?
This is the pain scale we operate on at Pain Specialists of Charleston:
- 0: No pain
- 1-3: Mild pain
- 4-7: Moderate pain
- 8-10: Severe pain
Whether your severe pain is acute or chronic, it causes stress on the whole body. This may result in other health concerns, like a higher pulse rate, elevated blood pressure, and dilated pupil size. You may begin sweating heavily and your hands and/or feet could start to feel cold to the touch. If you’re experiencing these symptoms along with pain, seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
WHAT IS A PAIN SCALE?
A pain scale is simply a way of rating or quantifying your pain to others. While there are many kinds of pain scales, we operate on a numerical one. A rating of zero indicates no pain, while a 10 is severe. Pain scales are subjective since they are based on self-reported data from you, the patient. Assigning a number to your pain allows your physician to better understand what you are experiencing.
CAN A DOCTOR TELL HOW MUCH PAIN YOU ARE IN?
Since pain is subjective, there is currently no accurate way to quantify it objectively. What feels like a 4 to one patient may be an 8 to another. This is why it’s so important to communicate your symptoms and level of pain effectively with your physician.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT?
During your initial appointment, your physician will perform a thorough examination and discuss your medical history, any medications you are currently taking, and additional symptoms. With this information, we’ll be able to create the most effective treatment plan for you.
